We’ve just launched a brand new fundraiser to help us begin making a big impact on the light pollution in Jackson! If successful, we’ll be able to begin a series of case studies with local businesses in collaboration with Energy Conservation Works, another local nonprofit, to quantitatively measure the light emitted from various locations around the valley. We’ll also have the resources to begin a full scale educational campaign to bring more awareness to the general public about light pollution.

If all goes well, we’ll have 20 new Sky Quality Meters ($200/each) and 20 GPS units ($85/each) to measure sky brightness at accurate and precise locations. We’ll also have the funds to start printing brochures, fliers, and other educational materials to bring more widespread attention to the problems associated with light pollution and the benefits of alleviating it.

How do you feel about the new lamp lights on Broadway?
We wish a little more research had gone into them before their installation. As they are, they increase brightness well beyond what is needed and create unnecessary glare. This actually makes the road less safe for drivers and wildlife. We’re hoping that with a successful fundraiser that we can replace them ourselves. Fortunately, the town and county are aware of our arguments and we’re doing our best to minimize the impacts.
Also, does the Community Streets Plan that the Town is poised to adopt include any prescriptions regarding street lighting?
We’re looking into the Community Streets Plan to make sure. We weren’t completely aware of it yet, but we are in communication with town and they appreciate our input and suggestions, so I doubt they’d do anything in the wrong direction without us knowing.
I would recommend you keep a close eye on street redevelopment projects. While many of us prefer dark skies, I think there are folks who are advocating for more street lights.
